Dezeen promotion: there are just two weeks left to enter Dezeen and Samsung’s competition to create Ambient Mode graphics for the brand’s QLED TVs.
With a prize pot of €29,500, the competition asks entrants to design a visual experience that displays when the TV is not in use.
This makes use of the Ambient Mode feature on Samsung‘s latest QLED televisions, which does away with the black screen when a television is off, and enhances the home environment with imagery and information instead.
Entries close on 3 August. Designers can read the full brief and submit their images and video via Dezeen.
The competition will be judged by graphic designer Neville Brody, industrial designer Erwan Bouroullec, plus Dontae Lee, head of the design centre at Samsung Electronics, and Dezeen’s editorial director Amy Frearson.
Brody discussed some of the features the jury will be looking for in a video for Dezeen last week.
“The competition is really to look at what Ambient Mode can offer,” Brody says. “There is an opportunity here to do something innovative and think differently about a home environment.”
“What we’re asking entrants to do is to think about different environments and the lifestyles of these environments, to do something that might flow with it or challenge it,” he continued.
Although not essential, judges have pointed out designers can make use of user interactive features when displaying information about the weather, time, user location or the surrounding environment.
The screen display may react to a user walking past the television.
In one example, birds emerge from behind the backdrop of mountains when motion occurs near the screen.
Designers can also show the passing of time by filling a ring on the screen with metallic balls as minutes go by.
Similarly, weather information could be shown more literally with the addition of moving imagery of clouds and water.
The competition is free to enter with €29,500 total prize money. The winner will receive €8,000, with €3,000 for the two runners-up, €1,500 for the other seven shortlisted entrants and €1,000 for the five who make it as far as the longlist.
Samsung will have the option to purchase the top 15 shortlisted entries for an additional €10,000, which will be paid to the selected designer.
Entrants must be over 18, professional designers or design students and able to present their work to a panel of English-speaking judges. They will need to be available from 27 August 2018 to 2 September 2018, as the five finalists will be invited by Samsung to electronics trade show IFA in Berlin.
